Independent Type Foundry Advent Calendar – Day 10: Colophon Foundry

Colophon Foundry is a foundry based on London founded by Anthony Sheret and Edd Harrington. The two designers started working together in 2009 in a shared graphic design studio in Brighton and began designing their own typefaces for the projects of their studio The Entente.

Each of our font releases begins life as one part of a graphic design commission, whereby the aesthetic or conceptual requirements of that project will dictate certain behaviours in the design of the type. As these requirements evolve – sometimes over the course of a number of years – so too will the design of the letterforms.

Their most popular typeface, especially in the early years of the foundry, is Aperçu, a quirky grotesque full of references to classic realist typefaces like Johnston, Gill Sans, Neuzeit, and Franklin Gothic, but with a contemporary feel.

Other notable releases in the wide-ranging library are Basis and the recently released Chromatic superfamily that travels different genres of sans-serifs.

If you want to test the typefaces first, you can get free demo fonts with a limited character set. And you can also order goods like posters and scarfs.
