We’ll start the advent calendar with one of the most successful foundries of the last decade. Grilli Type is a Swiss type foundry that was founded in 2009 by Noël Leu and Thierry Blancpain. Today, the studio numbers eight people dispersed all across the globe. The foundry is known for creating high-quality, contemporary typefaces that push the boundaries of what is possible with type design. Some of their most notable typefaces include GT Planar, GT Sectra, and GT America – but it is actually really hard to pick a favorite because all of their type designs are distinctive and unique.
Also make sure to have a look at the special minisites that accompany each Grilli Type release. Each of them is a beautifully designed digital type specimen that often also shows the intricate details and characteristic design elements in animated infographics. And in case you want to test drive some of their fonts, they offer trial versions with a subset of characters.
In case you understand German, you might also enjoy the conversation with type designer and account director at Grilli Type Tobias Rechsteiner in episode 85 of the podcast OHNE DEN HYPE.
